The Mandalorian's Baby Yoda Name Reveal Breaks Star Wars Tradition
The Star Wars franchise broke a tradition with The Mandalorian's Baby Yoda name reveal by going against what was previously known about the species.
The Star Wars franchise broke a tradition with The Mandalorian 's big Baby Yoda name reveal. Officially referred to as "the Child" ahead of season 2's episode, "The Jedi," the infant's real name is confirmed to be Grogu. Ahsoka Tano revealed the name to Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) after connecting with the Force-sensitive being on Corvus. Rosario Dawson played the former Jedi Padawan in her long-awaited live-action Star Wars debut after serving as a lead character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
When Grogu made his debut in the final moments of The Mandalorian's first episode, the infant instantly became a cultural phenomenon. Seeing as Jedi Master Yoda remains as one of the most popular characters to come out of the franchise, a younger version of the same species had instant appeal. Not only is Grogu an adorable little creature, but his existence is quite compelling to his lack of a backstory. Ahsoka filled in some of those blanks by unearthing the fact that Grogu was raised and trained in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant prior to the fall of the Republic. Some took him into hiding during the Great Jedi Purge, leading the 50-year-old infant to suppress his Force powers as a way to survive.
Despite the new information presented in The Mandalorian, there are still many details surrounding Grogu's life that remains a mystery. Among them is his species considering the Star Wars franchise has never stated that aspect of Yoda's existence. Aside from Yoda and Grogu, the only other member of the same species who exists in current Star Wars canon was Yaddle, a Force-sensitive female who was a member of the Jedi High Council duringStar Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.Seeing as the other two members of the species were named Yoda and Yaddle, many viewers predicted that Star Wars would follow the pattern with a name that started with a "Y" when it came to the Child. Instead, The Mandalorian broke tradition and went with Grogu.
What Baby Yoda Could Have Been Named If Star Wars Followed The Tradition
Even though only two previous characters have been introduced in the canon fictional universe, there was reason to believe a tradition was being set in place. Certainly, the live-action Star Wars series could have gone with the pattern by picking a "Y" name. "Yogu" is a possibility, as is "Yorgu," which goes along with what Baby Yoda's name actually turned out to be. There was a belief that Yoda and Yaddle's species had "Y" names for a significant reason, but it looks like that's no longer the case. Were Star Wars Legends a consideration for canon, of course, the lore would also include both Vandar Tokare and Oteg in Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic games respectively. With them consigned to Legends, they have no bearing here on the established convention.
Interestingly enough, Grogu's name was leaked well before it was revealed in The Mandalorian . As Din continues to investigate the Child's background, it will be interesting to see if any other members of the species make their Star Wars debut. There's a theory that Yaddle is actively looking for Grogu, allowing her to appear in season 2 or beyond. Whatever the case, fans need to get used to hearing Grogu as the identifier for the Force-sensitive foundling.
